Memories of Ron

Ronald (Ron) Hermanns served in the Pacific in WWII. He was station at Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides, now Vanuatu, Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, and at Jacquinot Bay which is on the island of New Britain near the capital of Rabaul. New Britain is now part of Papua New Guinea.

This book contains chapters pertaining to his early life, his war service, his time spent as an aircraft engineer for NAC and Air New Zealand, and his retirement.

It also holds numerous colour photos of his trench art, his personal recollections, and contributions from many who knew Ron well.

For a number of years, Ron had been WWII’s oldest veteran, and during 2020 he became New Zealand’s oldest person. When he died on 30 August 2021, he was just 26 days short of his 110th birthday.
