The Three Pence Spitfire Cufflinks

These unique, hand-crafted cufflinks are made in Nelson by Martin de Ruyter.  Taught by his late grandfather, each piece is shaped from a 3d or three pence coin into the shape of a spitfire fighter aircraft.

This type of jewellery is sometimes known as trench art.

Single cufflink size approx. 2.5 x 2 cm.

Martin explains that Jim, his grandfather, then a 15-year old bay in war-torn England, fashioned these items ‘during tea breaks while building real spitfires for the RAF in a factory near his home in Swindon.  He used the three pence coin because of their high silver content, and I use New Zealand three pence coins for the same reason’.
