New to the collection: Night vision goggles

Embracing new technology is key to the RNZAF’s ability to continue to deliver effective air power in an ever-changing world.

As the custodians of the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s material history this trend is also reflected in our collection, although by the time these technological innovations get to us they are hardly cutting edge anymore!

A great example of this is these recently-acquired AN/AVS-6 Aviator’s Night Vision Imaging System, or more simply night vision goggles. Fitted to a standard Alpha-type flying helmet, with battery pack velcroed to the back, and goggles attached to a rail on the front, these goggles allowed for safer, more efficient flying in low light conditions.

Initially 15 sets of these goggles were purchased in 1992 for use with No. 3 Squadron Iroquois flying night operations in support of the New Zealand Army.

Nine of these were modified in 1997 with larger eyepieces (upgraded from 15mm to 25mm eyepieces) prolonging their suitability for service. In 2004 the outdated AN/AVS-6s were replaced with more modern AN/AVS-9s but the AN/AVS-6s were retained for training purposes.

Now, night vision goggles are utilised by No. 3 Squadron, No. 6 Squadron and No. 40 Squadron making them an integral enabler of RNZAF operations making missions such as the rare mid-winter medical evacuation flight to Antarctica carried out in June 2024  possible. This set of AN/AVS-6 goggles will reside here as a testament to technological advance.
